A simpler starting point than sheet music.

Reading a drum chart adds a new set of symbols to learn. Rhythm Letters gives each beat pattern a familiar label, so you can recognize it, hear it and start practicing.

Notation-led lessons

Reading the rhythm
Read note values, rests and groupings to work out the rhythm.
Knowing which hand to use
Use sticking marks or a teacher's guidance. Standard notes do not always specify a hand.
Getting started
Learn notation alongside timing, coordination and technique.

The Letter Method

Reading the rhythm
Recognize one letter for a whole beat pattern. Reuse that pattern when it appears again.
Knowing which hand to use
Follow the displayed right and left hands in each letter exercise.
Getting started
Start with a few letters and apply them in simple rhythms. Add more as you practice.

Standard notation is useful for detailed charts and rhythms beyond these patterns. Both approaches need practice to build timing, coordination and technique.
